As part of their ongoing effort to clean up Flushing Bay, the Empire Dragon Boat team is joining River Keeper to host an informational meeting on how to help keep local waterways clean tonight at Flushing Town Hall.
The community training event will focus on informing local residents about the state of water quality in NYC’s urban waterways, how infrastructure problems and land misuse have led to their contamination, and how to recognize illegal sources of pollution as well as what to do about them, according to the River Keeper website.
The Empire Dragon Boat team is New York City’s only team that is fully populated by cancer survivors, and the team trains in Flushing Bay on a regular basis.
As a result of contamination from sewage and storm runoff in the bay, several team members have been hospitalized after exposure to the water, with reported reactions including gastrointestinal problems and persistent skin rashes. For this reason, the team is actively involved in Bay cleanup efforts.
Flushing Town Hall is located at 137-35 Northern Boulevard, and the event will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Parking is hard to find, so LAZ parking garage (5 min walk from Flushing town Hall,) is offering a special discount to Town Hall visitors. $10 for 3 hours, or $20 for the entire day!
