Taiyaki NYC comes to Queens Crossing for pop-up

The growing dessert scene in Flushing has welcomed its latest addition.

On Friday, Councilman Peter Koo, the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce and other business leaders welcomed Taiyaki NYC to the neighborhood.

Hundreds of people lined up on Friday to get their hands on the sweet treat.

The shop features Unicorn Floats and Japanese-style fish-shaped waffles. The popular Japanese street vendor snack contains red bean filling at the bottom, and ice cream on top.

Taiyaki NYC will operate a pop-up shop at Queens Crossing food court until October 21.

Ribbon cut on new College Point field

Last Saturday, Councilman Paul Vallone joined the leaders of the Shannon Gaels to cut the ribbon on the team’s new athletic field at Frank Golden Park.

Vallone allocated $500,000 to fund the two-phase Frank Golden Park renovation project.

The first phase consisted of a complete renovation of the field between 133rd Place and 135th Street.

Phase Two will involve a renovation of the field immediately to the west. A groundbreaking is slated for later this year.

This weekend, recycle your electronic waste for free at Kissena Park.

State Senator John Liu, Assemblywoman Nily Rozic and Councilman Peter Koo are co-hosting this event on Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kissena Park is located at 164th Street between Oak and Underhill avenues in Fresh Meadows.

Acceptable materials include: work and non-working computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mouse, cables, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, audio-visual equipment, cell phones and PDAs.

Independence Day Celebration at Fort Totten set for 6/26

Fireworks FlyerThe Bayside Historical Society, Queens Chamber of Commerce and Councilman Paul Vallone are teaming up to host the fifth annual Independence Day Celebration at Fort Totten.

The annual celebration will take place on Wednesday, June 26, starting at 6 p.m. The fireworks will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m., when the sun sets.

In years past, despite gloomy weather, thousands of residents from all over northeast Queens have turned out to enjoy this family-friendly event.

Here are the details for this year’s event:

  • Admittance to Fort Totten will begin at 5 p.m.
  • Parking is available at the Little Bay Parking Lot, along Bell Boulevard, as well as at the Clearview Golf Course and the Bay Terrace Shopping Center. Shuttles will be provided.
  • Guests are encouraged to bring their own blankets, lawn chairs and picnic items
  • Musical performances will include MM Rock Camp, Chicken Head Rocks and Phil Costa & the Something Special Big B, from 6 to 9 p.m.
  • This is a non-alcoholic event
  • All bags, coolers and backpacks will be inspected by the NYPD before entry
  • Vending trucks will be on site with food, snacks and beverages

Flushing nurse honored by NYC Alliance Against Sexual Assault

Flushing resident Amy Smith, a nurse practitioner at LIJ Forest Hills, was honored earlier this week by the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault for her work with sexual assault victims.

Smith has been a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) for 11 years, and helped lunch a SANE program at Lenox Hill Greenwich Village as well.

She also serves at the program coordinator of SANE training at Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies. Twenty nurses are in the program’s inaugural class.

An exam by a SANE nurse could take up to six hours. It includes gaining the patient’s trust, asking questions and doing a physical exam to check for injury and forensic evidence.

Kenvic Training, Flushing Chamber host Google workshop

Kenvic Training Center in Downtown Flushing is inviting local business owners and entrepreneurs to a free Google livestream tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m.

Attendees can learn, for free, about the basics of online advertising and how to use Google Ads to meet their goals.

The Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce, which is co-hosting the event, is a Grow with Google Partner, which is an initiative to help entrepreneurs across the country gain the digital skills needed to grow their business.

The event is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is required by RSVPing here.

Google swag will be given away on a first-come, first-serve basis.
