Get a preview of the Flushing CSA this weekend

Flushing residents will get a chance to meet with local farmers from Golden Earthworm Organic Farm to launch the 2014 season for Flushing Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).
The “Meet the Farmer” forum, which will take place on Sunday, March 16, at the Flushing Quaker Meetinghouse, 137-16 Northern Boulevard, is free and open to the public.
Farmers from Golden Earthworm Organic Farm will bring samples of the fruits and vegetables that Flushing CSA members can expect this year. The event will also feature presentations by organic vendors and local urban farm groups.
Flushing CSA will deliver 26 weeks of vegetables from the end of May to the end of
November. The response from last year’s participants was overwhelmingly positive and Flushing CSA organizers expect to double the number of local families served to 60.
Shares in the Flushing CSA will cost $560 a year – which comes out to about $21.62 a week – enough food for a family of three adults or two adults and two children.
Flushing CSA is open to all. Members pick up their shares on Thursdays between 6 and 8 p.m. at Flushing Town Hall, 137-35 Northern Blvd. For more information, contact the Flushing CSA at FlushingCSA@gmail.com or (646) 801-4021. You can also visit facebook.com/flushingcsa to learn more.

Assemblyman Ron Kim announced last week that two bus routes that circle the historic St. George’s Episcopal Church on Main Street in Downtown Flushing and then idle all day long just feet from the church, will instead use a new turnaround starting this September.

Instead, the buses will idle as they wait to resume their route in front of Muni Lot 1 across from Queens Crossing Mall.

The Queens Examiner has more here.

Advocating for the change was part of Kim’s CleanFlushing Initiative.

Help Save a Life

The Flushing Library is going to host a Marrow Registry event near the end of March. Think you could be a match?

Details:

Queens Library HealthLink Flushing Cancer Action Council and the New York Blood Center invite healthy adults to give someone a second chance at a healthy life by registering
for the BE THE MATCH Marrow Registry. Registration will take place on Monday, March 28, 2011, between 2 and 8 pm at Queens Library at Flushing, 41-17 Main Street and Kissena Boulevard. Registration is quick, safe, painless and free. To sign up, please call Queens Library at Flushing, (718) 661 – 1200, extension 0.

Each day, thousands of people with serious illnesses search for a bone marrow donor to make a life-saving transplant possible. Because tissue types are inherited, patients are most likely to match someone of their own race and ethnicity. Donors representing diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds are needed so that every patient has a second chance at
life. A patient’s likelihood of having a suitable donor on the Be The Match Registry who is willing and able to donate on their behalf is estimated to range from 66% to 93%, depending on race and ethnicity. Most patients (about 70%) do not find a match in their families. They need your help.

Volunteers need to be between the ages of 18 and 60, be willing to donate to any patient in need and meet the health guidelines.
Registration only means that the volunteer will be in a database for possible contact at a later date. You are not committing to donate. For
more information about The National Marrow Donor Program, please call 1-800-MARROW-2 or visit BeTheMatch.org.
